Slip And Fall In Florida

In Florida, according to the Florida Department of Health, falls are the leading cause of injury death among Florida residents ages 65 years and older and the fourth leading cause of injury death overall. Further, falls are the leading cause of non-fatal, injury-related hospital admissions in Florida, with the highest numbers occurring in both Miami-Dade and Broward County. These falls can happen anywhere! Whether at the Publix Grocery Store in downtown Fort Lauderdale, or the American Airlines Arena in Miami, there is no set place for an injury to occur. Some of the most common places we encounter involve Slip and Falls in the Home, Workplace, Restaurants, Grocery Stores, or Public Streets.

Factors Leading To Slip And Fall Accidents

When people think of Slip and Falls, the first image that comes to mind is one of the two first images above. The “wet floor” sign to the person’s side and water on the floor having caused someone to fall and injure themselves. Now a lot of times, businesses or overseers fail to timely place this “wet floor” sign and people suffer as a result of their negligence. There are other common causes of Slip and Falls such as: failing to maintain a walkway; failing to provide a legal, appropriate railing; cracked tiles creating uneven surfaces; negligently installing flooring that has a high propensity to cause people to slip; and, cracked and/or uneven sidewalks are regularly not maintained and cause accidents and injuries every single day.

What Happens When Someone Typically Falls?

  1. Their head hits the floor or another surface. This is a very dangerous situation because this type of head injury can cause fractures, concussions, memory issues, blackouts, and, in severe cases, traumatic brain injuries. Any time you injure yourself and your head get hurt in any way, be sure to get yourself to a safe place and contact a knowledgeable attorney to assist you in dealing with such a dangerous issue.
  2. They try to catch themselves and injure themselves further. When you begin to fall, it is natural for a person to try to catch themselves to avoid any further injury or pain, but this can cause even further damage. When someone tries to catch themselves, the unexpected fall can create a strong pressure downward that will damage their arm and/or shoulder when they post their arm out to catch themselves. Be sure to make sure you are cognizant of all surrounding to attempt to avoid this type of personal injury.
  3. They fall backward and land on their back. A fall may cause a person to suffer injuries to his spinal cord, resulting in bulging or herniated discs. In severe cases, spinal cord injuries can also lead to permanent paralysis and other neurological conditions and sensory impairments, especially if left untreated. Back pain is also very difficult as it may take days or even weeks to present itself, so be sure to speak with both your attorney and physician after any Slip and Fall.
  4. They fall and bang their elbow or knee on the ground or another object. Blunt force trauma and ensuing fractures and/or tissue damage is inevitable at times when a person suffers a fall as a result of someone else’s negligence. Be sure to take care of yourself and never neglect your health after a fall because the damage may not present itself immediately and quick, appropriate medical care can help to deter further damage.
